Gnaanaambigaa sametha Dhaenupureeswarar Temple , Patteeswaram
a very ancient temple worshipped by rama and patti , the daughter of kamadhenu , patteeswaram is a temple sung in thevaram.
patteeswaram is 8 km from kumbakonam to the south west.
but patteeswaram is well known for its other feature , the patteeswaram durgai. though it is added much later to the temple during the nayak reign , this old shiva temple is famously known as durgai temple of patteeswaram.
kanchi paramacharya revealed that patteswaram temple was worshipped by rama to get rid of brahmahathi dosham as he killed a great warrior ravana who was a brahmin.
the namesake comes from patti, the daughter of kamadhenu worshipping the lord and hence the name dhenupureeswarar.
however this temple is very famous for a later added feature what is the durgai amman who is a shanta swarupini here and graces the devotees and bestows with every wealth that is possible.
this temple is also where govinda dikshitar spent his last years.
its proximity to parayaarai makes it an important place in the chola times as well.
